Boys Battle Through Repechage at Tullan Strand

This day marks the start of the knockout rounds for the less fortunate with the start of the repechage.
The girls competed on the main stage at The Peak, which was ultimately cut short due to the ebb tide, preventing the subsiding swell from breaking sufficiently, while the boys competed on Stage 2 at Tullan Strand, which was better oriented and offered waves large enough (80 cm to 1 m) to continue throughout the day.
It was therefore the boys who took center stage on this intense day, largely driven by a powerful onshore wind that gave the wild coast of Tulland Strand a whole new look.

In the U18 division, the favorites in these repechage rounds fared very well, allowing Spain, Italy, and Portugal to keep their hopes alive for the final title.
A few surfers stood out, such as Finland’s Joakim Bjorck, his country’s sole representative, who demonstrated fast and effective backside surfing, allowing him to advance through the two repechage rounds without any trouble. Tiago Hannsen (SWE) also won the final repechage heat, while his brother Nando is set to do the same tomorrow.
While the Swiss surfers Rosskopf and Bienz both qualified for Rep 3, the Polish surfers Rambo and Wykrzykowski saw their run end in the same heat, allowing Nicholas Howley (IRL) to advance to Rep 3 alongside Italy’s Alberto Barzan.

In the U16 division, Finland’s Joakim Bjorck continued his strong run and qualified for Rep3.
Spain’s Stephano Mandozzi was no mere participant, as he posted the highest total score of the competition in this category. Facing the waves, the 14-year-old surfer impressed everyone. Fast and aggressive on the left-handers, he strung together waves scoring 9.50 points and 7.35 points with disconcerting ease.
His total of 16.85 points hints at a potential title contender, as it’s worth noting that under the repechage system, surfers who go through this “parallel circuit” have the chance to reach the grand final after a much longer journey than those who remained in the main draw.
Among the day’s standout performances, Michael Montero (ITA) and Matthew Maurin Lignière (FRA) deserve special mention.

The competition resumes Wednesday at 10:15 a.m., with the girls’ and boys’ longboarders taking to the main stage. Stage 2 will again be reserved for repechages to finish the boys’ rounds and, most importantly, make up for the heats that didn’t take place the previous day.
